Sustainable Spatial Planning and Society: Cultivating Sustainability in Self, Community and Place
Course tutor: Daniel Schwab, Bauhaus University Weimar
In this course, we will study how an integrated approach to sustainability is possible, and will attempt to put it into practice. We will focus on three distinct types of methods that together make up an integrated approach:
• First-person methods deal with understanding and deepening one’s own experience.
• Second-person methods allow us to understand, communicate, and build systems of meaning with others.
• Third-person methods are used to understand and act in the objective world.
The course will bridge the fields of spatial planning, ecology, society, and the self, using readings, discussions, exercises, presentations and site visits. We will put this approach into practice by enacting a sustainable way of life in the city, experiencing our connection to place, and working with each other.
